We had a server that we kept on constantly. Originally we had a hardware firewall but an inexperienced (or totally daft) tech disconnected it and installed ZoneAlarm. Someone hacked into the PC, right through ZA, and created several hidden directories of files and instantiated a mail server that sent out gazillions of naughty spam mails. We found our server was on the spam blacklist and the machine had to be wiped and completely rebuilt from the ground up. One symptom -- it would not shut down.
