Thanks Cheryl - but that's not the problem. I'm not touching anything other than "Start - Turn Off" and it merrily goes it's way and then starts up again!! I've spent all day chasing possible solutions but to no avail. Just doing a complete scan right now to make sure there aren't any "nasties" sneaked in. Virus Protection and Firewall are kept up to date so should be OK - but you never know!!

By the way - I take it that you are using laptops from what you say. As a trained Health and Safety Inspector I'd caution against that - we are seeing increasing numbers of medical problems from people doing that. Over here it's illegal to require an employee use one for permanent operations and they shouldn't be used for more than one hour continuously to avoid long-term problems.

Regards

Peter

Have you checked the BIOS? Sounds like your power button may be set to act
as a restart. That used to be a bios controlled setting but I rarely use a
desktop anymore so I don't know if it still is. I do know on some of our
systems to turn really turn off the machine you have to hold the power
button for 10-15 seconds.

I've a PC that is not quite a year old and in the past week or two it's
developed an inability to shut itself down.

I don't usually switch off at all as I have a broadband connection but we
have been away for a couple of weekends in succession and the forecast
wasn't good so in case of thunder and lightening I shut down. However, once
it has gone through the shutdown procedures, it starts itself up again
within two or three seconds! Only way to cure it is to cut off the mains
supply.

Any suggestions as to cause or cure before I go back to the supplier please?
(The system was assembled to my requirements by a small local supplier from
standard parts and has been totally reliable thus far, in use all day every
day and no problems). Running WinXP on a 3.3GHz Athlon.

One suggestion has been a faulty BIOS. I'm not that technical but do want to
be able to "fight my corner" if I take it back under guarantee (one year and
there are about six weeks left!)
