I won't have another desktop. I don't like trying to sych between machines.
However, when I'm at my desk I use an external keyboard and if I didn't have
a tablet it would probably have an external monitor as well. As it is my
tablet is used in portrait position on a stand that is quite comfortable.

Personally I don't like using a laptop in a lap. Using the tablet is okay
but only because I never use it in laptop mode while in my lap for more than
a line or two of text (and then only if absolutely necessary - on screen
keyboards usually work as well or better anyway.) The ergonomics are one
reason I'll never have a traditional laptop voluntarily again.

Some of the companies we work with don't have desktops for any of their
employees or contractors. Primarily that's because most of their work
involves travel and they work from home, hotel room, client's office or
wherever.

Nationally we're seeing rising cases of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) due
to the keyboards being unsuitable for correct posture and long-term typing
(keys too close together), we're seeing cases of back pain due to people
being hunched over them rather than sitting upright in a good posture (that
often applies to home
workers) and also eyestrain due to the type of screen fitted. The back
pain/eyestrain issues are often combined as the top of screen of any
computer that is in constant use should be roughly level with the eyebrow
but laptops of course don't have that size screen! Often the various
problems combine.

I advise all my clients to have a Policy that laptops are not under any
circumstances to be used in preference to a desk-top in the office, nor in
any home office. (Employers here are liable for ensuring the correct
equipment is used in home offices. There is even a lobby that says they
should be liable even if they didn't supply the furniture!!)

The whole issue is complex (there are other considerations too) and has
plenty of opportunity for argument and discussion. I steer clear of that and
simply advise best practice - if that is observed then the employer has done
his part!
(Says he ducking below parapet again!!)
