Hi there,

Mom and I use MSN Messenger and particularly the Remote Assistance feature as she lives a ways from me and I do alot of puter fixing etc for her this way so I don't have to drive over there all the time. Well, today we were going to try a Remote and my MSN Messenger popped up an upgrade when she tried to remote in to me. I went to do the usual (all tooooooo often in my opinion) upgrade and it clicked me over to a page to upgrade to Service Pack 2.

Seems I can't upgrade my MSN Messenger w/o upgrading the entire system to Service Pack 2 which I refuse to do. I actually did try once right after a reformat some time ago and it wouldn't do the upgrade. I forget what happened but I never did get it upgraded and to do it now is out of the question. I'll wait 'till I get a new puter.

I'm guessing that you're using Windows XP? If so, then upgrade to SP2, it does provide a much needed security boost and fixes a number of flaws in the system. If you have concerns about your privacy and do not trust Windows Genuine Advantage to report only on the software that is installed, do a custom windows update (not an express one) and deselect WGA. Oh yeah, and get your mum to upgrade too! :)

Anyway - final point is - anyone know a workaround for this so I can get MSN Messenger upgraded w/o going to SP2? I really HATE forced anything! Whatever happened to this being America and us Americans having a choice?

Unfortunately windows is engineered in such a way that you must obey Redmond. Windows Vista (the next release) is locked down so tight that you will only beable to use a Microsoft Anti-Virus and a Microsoft Spy Sweeper on your Microsoft computer.

With regard to it being America and you having a choice, we all have a choice, although the majority of PCs are shipped with Windows, you can chose not to use it. If you want to be brave and venture away from Redmond and it's forced updates (and there are plenty more to come, Internet Explorer 7 will be forced upon you all as part of a windows update within the next six months), check out the alternatives!

Ubuntu Linux ( http://www.ubuntu.com/ ) is a very friendly linux distribution which will run from the CD for you to test, so you don't even have to install it before you try it. Should you want to install it, there is an easy Graphical Installer that helps you do this.

I switched to Linux about five years ago, and one of the few things I dislike about my job is the fact that I have to work with a clunky operating system over which I have no control (Windows).

My £0.02,

Matt
