Not necessarily. You can run a Linux system which will do most work
satisfactorily on lesser hardware than an equivalent Windows box, for
free, and more securely (in general).
There are a lot of perfectly good old DOS programs with no security issues
and with low hardware requirements that WXPSP2 cannot run, one reason many
_can't_ as a practical matter install SP2.
Yup, agreed. I sure as hell wasn't suggesting installing SP2, I was
backing Matt's suggestion of looking into the many free alternatives
out there.
