I'm guessing that you're using Windows XP? If so, then upgrade to SP2, it does provide a much needed security boost and fixes a number of flaws in the system. If you have concerns about your privacy and do not trust Windows Genuine Advantage to report only on the software that is installed, do a custom windows update (not an express one) and deselect WGA. Oh yeah, and get your mum to upgrade too! :)
Yes, using XP Home version. I tried the upgrade on a fresh install after reformat and it wouldn't upgrade. I believe I mentioned that. Besides, all I heard is how people have problems w/their stuff afterwards. Pretty sure it's hardware stuff as I recall but I'm in no mood nor do I have the time to ask for more problems than I already have.
Unfortunately windows is engineered in such a way that you must obey Redmond. Windows Vista (the next release) is locked down so tight that you will only beable to use a Microsoft Anti-Virus and a Microsoft Spy Sweeper on your Microsoft computer.
Well, that just sucks. Everything they make has holes in it. As it stands right now there are several firewalls and anti-virus programs that work better than theirs. Making it so one can only use their stuff smacks of Communism!
With regard to it being America and you having a choice, we all have a choice, although the majority of PCs are shipped with Windows, you can chose not to use it. If you want to be brave and venture away from Redmond and it's forced updates (and there are plenty more to come, Internet Explorer 7 will be forced upon you all as part of a windows update within the next six months), check out the alternatives!
Well, I was referring to just this topic. Once again we're back to I don't have time, money or the inclination to move away from what I have and am used to. I just want to be able to use my Remote Assistance with my Mom. That's it. Thanks for the other suggestions but I'll settle for just being able to do what I need to do w/what I have.
