Tradition has it that semiconductor companies enter into agreements
to second source products so that there is not just one manufacturer to
depend upon. This tradition came from the rules regarding production of
material for our military, and was generally adopted by other buyers of
critical integrated circuits as a way of insuring that they did not end up
with lots of orders and lots of partly complete product.

When you base an industrial revolution on a few devices, the entire
society comes to expect the revolution to continue, and depend upon the
manufacturers of those devices to play fair. If they do not, then in some
way, society steps in to rectify that situation. The bottom line is that
profits are a reward for helping society. Society also has ways of
dealing with those who promise more than they deliver.
