Hi Kieran

>Anyone have an informed opinion on when one is more appropriate than the

I've been using Cold Fusion for over 18 months and I love it. The language
has grown to include lots of tags that go way beyound "just" Db work.

HOWEVER....

I was talking to a client yesterday and I mentioned CF on one of her
servers and she said "... if we keep it on there...". They were looking at
going to ASP... Why?? The most common reason for leaving a great product to
use another...

"It a Microsoft product... and we can easily get any number of contractors
to do ASP but it's almost impossible to find someone to do CF (apart from
me)".

It's not that they are trying to get rid of me. They want me, but I don't
have the time to do stuff for them. So in an attempt to get their stuff
done they may change to a more ubiquitous product.

I just found out yesterday that I got the Uni job I was after. They use
Cold Fusion, one of the reasons I got it is that I do CF. So it can be an
advantage.

HOWEVER... (life's just full of however's)

While the Faculty probably will not use ASP, as that also means a change to
the Microsoft IIS server rather than the preferred Netscape Enterprise
server, I think I should at least have some idea of what ASP is and what it
can do.

Soooo...

Any pointers, ideas etc to get started? I have NT server 4, service pack 3,
on hand which I think has ASP but I don't know where to start. I looked at
the obvious (Microsoft site) but if I remember correctly it was messy and I
couldn't find anything as simple as ASP FAQ's.

Also...

One of my old free sites is moving to another server. I had hoped it would
be one of my CF servers as I will need to do some DB work for it very soon.
However... they have decided to put it on a Linux box (not sure of the
flavour yet). That's fine, as it is currently on a Unix box and I know
enough to do what I need to. The question now arises as to how can I do DB
stuff without using Selena's or Matt's stuff. Peter S has mentioned using
mSQL or mySQL and Perl in the past (lost it, sorry Peter). Any pointers
here would be good also. :)

thanks
Bruce
