There was a story in Wired.com about "RealName", site is at
http://company.realnames.com/
>From the site:
"A Real Name address allows users to type a company name, a product name or an
advertising slogan directly into a browser. The Web page for that
company, product
or campaign will be delivered instantly. There are no intermediate steps
and there is
no need to remember (or guess!) a lengthy or unfamiliar URL."
and
"Your Real Name will be stored in an XML file on your Web server and
replicated in
our central repository. You control storage of your XML file locally; the
central
repository makes information about your site available globally. Storage
on your
server enables us to verify that Real Name mappings are only made by
legitimate site
owners. Your control of file storage protects the security of your server."
The message of this site _implies_ that all web surfers have to do is type
in some natural language phrase company name, etc. into the Location line
in their browser, and they will access a URL. I can't believe this.
Then on another page in the site their is an announcement that Alta Vista
has joined the RealName service. So perhaps this works only through search
engines that are partners with RealName. That I can believe.
Thoughts?
