A bit extreme.

Well.. You may have a TEMPORARY problem, kind of like the gas crisis
or California suddenly issuing IOU's during our little "recession"...

For maybe a week at the most! ATM machines might take longer, but I'd
not panic. People will take common sense efforts to keep their companies
working, and the value of commodities stable.
> how to survive without them. Plan ahead! (That should be your mantra.)

Worthless... at most, you will need one week's supply; but more than
likely nothing critical in the food chain will fail!
I survived Loma Prieta, that quake in Califaultia, without much
trouble. When things got bad, some of the burger joints just gave food
away free. Same for water out of the non-working supermarkets, all done
on the manager's, not the corporate, initiative. They took responsibility
for helping save lives, and said they would face up to the consequences
later. In a day, things were back to semi-normal, though it took longer
to get electricity back up and the store isles cleared of the "dough" and
"salad" that resulted.

What you describe might happen in 2999, when all the world is totally
interlinked, but would only likely happen... in say when our technology is
ten to thirty years more advanced IF those had just happened to be in the
1999-2000 transition time frame. Our technology just happens to be too
primitive to come crashing down that badly!
People, by and large, will help each other in this nation. Maybe in
the bad neighborhoods there may be problems with looting, but not all over
the country! We are not an oppressed majority! We WANT this country to
work! And we will stand out in the streets helping people like ourselves
to our best ability. Remember how poor blacks helped save rich people
from their cars in the Cypress structure collapse after Loma Prieta? No
looting, but real life saving help! THAT is AMERICA! Not Bosnia. And
even in Bosnia, most people WANT things to work! Yes, there may be some
problems in rough neighborhoods, but those you can stay away from.
