>I was wondering, if there was a Y2K survival guide... what would be in it?
>What would be the worst case scenario?

A declared federal emergency across the entire nation. Martial law (don't
laugh, it's one of FEMA's backup plans).

>Should you start investing in hard currency, such as gems and jewelry?
>Stock up on canned goods? Keep paper currency inside a mattress?... then
>again, a -recession- isn't as bad as a -Depression-.

Get rid of all your debt (as much as possible, at least), and invest in
real property and other tangible assets. I'd liquidate virtually
everything (I don't feel safe having all my money in a bank, anyhow...
too many eggs in one basket). Gold is presently at a low point (has been
for a while). If the economy doesn't implode, gold is unlikely to
skyrocket in value, so you probably won't make a killing. You're unlikely
to lose, though, and if things do get bad, you'll have a great safety
net. Fiat currency would be worth less than toilet paper.

Learn how to live without the finer things in life, such as electricity,
clean running water, natural gas, gasoline, ATM machines, telephones,
etc. Basically, you can't be sure that you'll have anything to rely on
other than what nature and your own body (and mind) can provide. I don't
mean you should give them up while they're available and cheap, just know
how to survive without them. Plan ahead! (That should be your mantra.)
Learn the lost art of canning and preserving food (no fridges without
electricity). Spend a few weekends learning how to hike/camp/survive in
the wild (even if you're not the outdoorsie type). Build your own
generator (old bike, car alternator and car battery... not that hard if
you're at all mechanically inclined) so you can charge nicads and run
your radios, laptops, small TVs, etc. Buy a gun and learn how to use it
intelligently and responsibly. Those who have the foresight to plan ahead
and are well-prepared will instantly become targets of those who find
themselves without (this is assuming a _worst_ case scenario... let's
hope it _never_ gets that way!), and it's your God-given right to defend
yourself and your property.

And if none of this ever comes to pass (and we all hope it doesn't),
thank God and pat yourself on the back for knowing that you took the
effort to ensure your survival. And no, I'm not a survivalist nut with a
giant compound full of non-perishable foods and a devastating stockpile
of armaments, :-) I'm just a good old fashioned independent American.
