I started on a Win95 machine. Personal Web Server (comes w/ FP, Interdev
and available as a download) supports ASP. The ASP server extensions are
on the InterDev CD. Not sure where else they are. So, install PWS, then
ASP extensions, and off you go. You can do all your work locally, without
threatening a server.
You can do real development this way. On Friday night (I'm married with
children, so no social life), I created a simple ASP system tied to JET
through a file ODBC link. Did all the work at home, then uploaded it to a
server. Modified the ODBC file DSN in notepad to point to the database's
path on the server. With file DSNs, you can easily create DSNs on a
server without any special software.
InterDev itself, or at least the first version, I found only marginally
useful. It has a few wizards that are worthwhile, and an OK general
editing environment, but overall it doesn't do that much. Haven't tried
the latest version - anyone have any opinions?
I use VBScript on the server side, though not on the client side
(JavaScript there). The language is strange for someone who grew up in an
abstract data type world, back when Computers Were Computers. Fuzzy and
unsettling. Still, it works.
