for a splash that sets the mood of a site. As a consumer of their
products, this one doesn't bother me that much. Not sure how much the
spash is worth, though. I agree that it should be done with care. 

Could use a cookie to make sure that the splash is shown only once, when a
person first uses a site. Can send some orientation message (like a mood
setter). They are less likely to need the message thereafter.

If you attach some JavaScript to the onload event, will the page be loaded
