My vote's with Jim. 10 seconds on a DSL for #2, versus 13 seconds on a DSL
for #1. Running a traceroute on both, I got 119 ms for dakotalights.com vs
210 ms for tenderlovingcare.cc. However, I wonder if this might be a domain
resolution slowdown. Does anyone know if the domain routers would be slower
to resolve a .cc domain than a .com? I wouldn't think so, but always good
to check these things out.
If the domain isn't the issue, then it could be a routing problem.
tenderlovingcare.cc goes through bbnplanet -- dakaotalights.com goes
through Alternet. Didn't someone buy BBNPlanet a while back? (10 internet
years or so, probably.) I have no personal preferences, but maybe
UUnet/Alternet has a better record for speed.
BTW, two of my tools when I'm comparing hosting speeds/services are
Internet Weather (to see the uptimes and packet losses for the ISP's upline
provider) and Netcraft (to see what server folks are running on). If you
haven't gone to either site yet, do check them out:
<http://www.internetweather.com/> and <http://www.netcraft.com/>. Suz, if
you know the domain name of tenderlovingcare's ISP, you can type that in at
netcraft to see what server software they're running -- dakotalights is on
Microsoft-IIS/3.0.
