Ditto to everything Jack said in his last email. It's also helpful to zero
in on who the *absolute* final decision-maker is within an organization.
Usually it's the boss, the CEO, the person with the checkbook. If you can't
get that person as your one contact person, then it helps to always remind
your more lowly contact person to make sure he/she gets the boss's approval
before signing off on anything.

Also it would be helpful to make sure that the contact person understands
that you cannot be held responsible for communications problems within the
client's organization. We ran into a problem with a project where one
partner got royally p.o.'d because we refused to make a major change
without additional compensation. After it was explained to him that his
partner had approved our comps and that we were already well beyond budget
and were essentially working for free, he backed off and got *really* nice.
Clients need to understand that when several people want input on creative
direction, they all need to get together on their input *before* giving the
artist the go-ahead.

>But that's another story: The transformation of creative
>culture. Small businesses and the home office are setting the pace for the
>future!

An interesting comment, since my Native American teacher/friend Rose
Morningstar
 ( http://www.KickassDesign.com/Rose/home.htm ) told me several years
ago that with our work style, we were on the "cutting edge" of future
trends. You know, if we were in a large office right now, we'd be so tied
up in bullshit unproductive meetings that we wouldn't have time to sit
around and philosophize about such matters, and we'd be taking our
PowerBooks home so to get some peace and quiet so we could get some work
done. And now I gotta go feed the rabbits....
