I must admit that I also shied away from taking your post seriously, due to
the aol.com address. Email from aol has spanned the gamut, from completely
infantile, to mean, to spam spam spam, to highly intelligent. Unfortunately,
the infantile side has created a poor reputation that follows aol.com users
around, whether they are aware of it or not. IMO.

Not needed, at least not in my case. Some talent and a real desire to do the
job certainly are important. Experience, whether it comes in the form of
months or years of learning in your free time or at a job, helps (though I
suppose a talented, bright person could sit down at a PC for their first
time, be shown the basics and start putting out some good work). I don't
think a degree in communications design is necessary...at this point the
time needed to acquire the degree may put you behind the curve anyway. I
find it's easier and faster to learn new things on my own than it is to
enroll in a class: I can control what I learn and how much I can absorb
dictates the time it takes me to learn it. I'm not restricted by class
scedules and class agendas.

I agree, but the issue of rights of ownership for web work is not covered
sufficiently in either book, as you may be able to tell my the other thread
currently going on on this list. Unfortunately I can't add to that list, re:
books.
Here's a link you may find of interest:

It might be a good learning experience, especially if you had a good guide.
I'm not sure how you'd go about getting such a tour...or finding a good
guide.
