FYI: by this list's standards, we're ALL rank novices. ;-)

i can do the database stuff, and sit in awe of the people who know the
graphics, and the streaming media, and the cutting-edge stuff like CSS/XML.
i'm enough of a luddite that i'll probably never want to use the DHTML
stuff that Brent has been experimenting with, but i'm the first to admit
that he knows a ton and a half more about it than i do (survival instinct..
i've learned what happens if you let somebody /else/ be the first to admit
it. ;-). there are also several long-standing members who can remember
watching me get royally (and rightfully) slapped down over matters of
copyright and religion where my enthusiasm got the better of my good sense.
if nothing else, this list has given me some good experience writing abject
apologies.

this is the virtual corner bar where i go after work to hang out with
people who can really understand my point when i'm in a mood to bitch.
the regular posters are the ones who've taken the risk of shedding their
anonymity and tacking their opinions on the dart board for all comers to
perforate at will. that's not a requirement of being on the list.. there
are plenty of people who are happy to sit in a quiet corner booth and watch
the antics of the self-expression junkies from outside shrapnel range.

as far as i can tell, nobody's ever been on 'top', and if we were all to
share our deep, dark secrets, i bet every one of the regular posters
occasionally feels just a bit intimidated by two or three of the others.
that's what makes it scary enough to be fun.

your statement about forebearance and patience was well thought out, and
very well worded. but fer pete's sake don't let shyness keep you from
posting.
