Take it further - expand it.Not just database. I am beginning to
meet people in the real world and many of them seem to consider a
database something fixed which resides on someones computer.
Relational of course. I am certainly sure I do not understand object
databases. But look towards the networked "database".
I guess it is just EDI I am thinking about but on a grander scale. I
had my first encounter with EDI while teaching execs of CVRD down in
Brazil -- it amazed me then.
Your database allows external people to talk to it. I once wrote a
waste of a time webpage to advertise a hotel. You were supposed to
choose your room, call and make a reservation.
If I were that hotel I would give access to a database of rooms to
responsible "partners". I might create a database that is separate
from the main database of available rooms and I would stock it with X
number of rooms. I then tell my "partners" that if they do X,Y,C --
using cgi scripts via web forms they or whoemever they want can
reserve a room. Why doesn't this already exist?? I have no idea. If
the hotel sees that they need more room then they can lookup how many
rooms are in the "partners' database" and they can reclaim some. If
someone gives up a reservation you just put it back in the database.
And then there should be such "links to partner databases" for car
rentals, ....... etc.
Personally I can do all of this. It is definitely not a question of
money. I think it is a question of vision and will.
