the Cliff's Notes version is that Microsoft released [1] a version of
Windows 3.1 that used all sorts of arbitrary, low-level bit twiddling
between itself and the OS.   that allowed it to tell whether it was running
on top of MSDOS or Caldera's DR DOS.   if it saw anything but MSDOS, it
would post meaningless but ominous warning messages (FUD factor), and crash
arbitrarily.

Caldera fought tooth & nail to get access to the source code for the
product, which would prove their claims unequivocally.   the court ordered
Microsoft to hand over the code, and darned if M$ didn't discover they'd
misplaced [2] it somehow.
