Quite frankly, I have no idea!
BUT... We web consultants can do something to promote a key reform
the flawed primary system that gets us these bozo's. After all, folks are
turning to the web these days, and that gives us more intelligent web
consultants some opportunity to TAKE polls and influence what is done...
bear with me for a bit...
One of the worst side effects of all this scandal, is that it scares
off people who might actually do us all some good. And what it does not
scare off, the flawed primary system kills off. That's why we get folks
like Klunkton, Nixon and The Peanut in the first place.
A good primary system would let us vote AGAINST those who are not
acceptable to us, or for ALL of those whom we think could do a good job.
Let us say we have four guys in the primary, three good solid folks
with decent popular policies, leaders a majority of voters would vote
for, and one charismatic SOB only 30 percent of the people even consider a
contender. So we get a split vote of 28% for A, 25% for B, and and 28%
for C. That's 71 percent of the vote. The SOB gets 29%, mostly with
disaffected voters, and he is our national candidate. Had A withdrawn,
votes for him would be split mostly between B and C, giving B 39% and C
42% and Mr. SOB, with only 30%, would have quickly been forgotten. What
is worse, who withdraws first, Mr. Realist, or Mr. Egomaniac? The most
realistic guy, of course!
Is this the kind of system we really want??? Didn't think so when I
read the Scientific American article 20 some odd years ago!
What can we do as web consultants? Someone in every stats should
set up a few polling web pages that let people vote pro and con on all the
candidates, not just one. The rest of us should point to that web site on
a lot of our pages. Then publicize the results to your regular media.
And explain how we polled, and why we need that reform.
Seems all we get, are egomaniacs and patriots. The egomaniacs are
willing to promise anything to get enough money. The patriots expect to
keep their promises, and so can't promise enough to raise the money to
keep going. It isn't the federal election funds thing that is the
problem; it is the way we can't vote against the SOB's, or for all the
acceptable folks.
We need to reform the primary system. We also need a "None of the
Above" to tell the system that it has not selected what we the voters
want! That is, I believe, why so many people stay home on election day.
They don't want to chose between the SOB the Democrat's primaries dredged
up, and the SOB the Republican primaries dredged up. They are both SOB's,
and the people know it! The people really wanted any of the decent
candidates A, B, or C. But our primaries eliminated them. Worse, the
primaries maybe even bankrupted the one the people most wanted to elect;
because we all encouraged him to bet everything on our popular support.
So now, he's out for good!
Who do I want? I don't know. [menu of undesirables deleted]
Al Gore is next in line. How much worse can he be? After that,
we've got another round of quacking ducks playing musical chairs across
the country with their financiers. Maybe someone decent will accidently
stumble into that game, but the way the system is rigged up, I doubt he or
she will last. Or even want to play.
We really need to fix the primary problem -- the primary system. And
we web consultants have the key to START this process. Make sense?
