Footnote on WINE and related applications: a few years back, I had
occasion to benchmark one particular application running on top of
a Windows emulator on top of Solaris 2.5 on an Intel machine vs.
the same application running on top of Windows on an identical Intel box.

The emulator version ran faster. *Much* faster. Which, given the
rather uninspired state of the emulator at the time, is not so much
a testimony to the skill of those who wrote the emulator, but to the
bag-on-the-side-of-a-bag-of-a-bag design that now constitutes Windows.

I rather expect newer releases of WINE to allow applications to
run rings around the same versions running in native mode.
