Following all the Linux v NT debates lately, I thought I'd throw in my two
cents' worth. Now anyone who's been on this list for a couple of years or
more knows full well that I'm pretty technically illiterate. Marketing,
strategy development and writing are my fortes, but I love tinkering with
puters. So here's my thoughts on Linux and NT.

The main reason I'm moving to Linux for my machines at home (and at work if
I had anything to do with it) is because ever since Windows came along,
I've been constantly peed off at the amount of time i lose because the
bloody thing crashes at the drop of the hat. I lost hours because I've had
to do work that's been lost since the last backup or simply waiting around
while the machine reboots.

I remember how easy it was under DOS - I could work all day without worryng
about the machine crashing. On 68k macs I rarely had a problem. But ever
since windows....

And I'm not just talking '95. I've tried all flavours from win2.0 upwards.
I got rid of NT on my workstation because it crashed more often than '95
did. So now I'm looking to move to Linux as my main op system.

So here's my question: I need the same sort of software I run on windows: a
good word processor, text editor, presentation software (I do admit to
liking PowerPoint), image processing, etc. Preferably all under X-windows.

Does all this stuff exist for Linus? I know all the server stuff does, but
what about the usual client business software? Hmmmm - maybe java based,
like Lotus e-suite, must check it out.

Any recommendations re the above? Preferably shareware (I don't mind paying
for stuff I find useful, but I like to check it out first).

Finally, I must make one point in favour of Microsoft. If it wasn't for
them, the massive increase in PC hardware capacity that's happened over the
last 10 years simply wouldn't have happened. Let's face it, it's really
been the huge increase in application size for windows that has forced the
hardware manaufacturers to make every bigger computers to keep up. If we'd
all been using Linux for the last 10 years, we'd probably still be happily
running 286s and be a great deal more productive for it.
