I use vi as my text editor; despite frequent claims from those addicted
t bloated word processors, vi is easy to learn, consistent, small,
and fast. I strongly recommend taking the time to learn it; it is
*the* ubiquitous Unix text editor.

I don't tend to follow much of the other application software
because I don't need or use any of it; when I have to format documents,
I use groff (freeware); I do basic image manipulation with xv
and xpaint (freeware); I don't do spreadsheets, but I'm told that
GNU 'sc' is a decent basic non-GUI spreadsheet.

However, I know that other people do, and there are products available
for these tasks. In particular, you might want to go to www.lsl.com
and click on "applications", which will get you to a page describing
offerings from Corel (Wordperfect), Quickstart (some kind of
"system replicator"), Crosswind (calendar/schedule), Faximum (fax),
SFS (Java development and other tools), SlickEdit and so on.
There's also a suit called "Star Office" from Star Division and
Caldera that has a word processor, spreadsheet, drawing package,
math package and who knows what else.

Or you can buy Wabi 2.2, which will let you run things like
Lotus SmartSuit 4.0 on top of it.
