How does this survey account for all the PC machines that are sold
with NT installed, but then have it de-installed to run Linux,
Solaris, FreeBSD, etc.?
How does it account for all the free copies of Linux?
Clearly, it does not, and given that there are millions of such
systems, this survey is obviously flawed.

Nonsense. I am aware of at least one Fortune 100 company which has
a *huge* investment in BSDI machines -- all of which came with some
version of Windows on them when they were purchased. Of course,
none of the pointy-hairs at the CIO level know about it, and all of
the machines are behind their corporate firewall, so unless you're
working on their network (like I did) you'd never know.
There are far more Unix machines -- especially on Intel platforms --
than any of these market surveys detect. NT is definitely selling
like crazy -- but "1 sale" != "1 deployment" in all cases.
