That's not sendmail. sendmail is for SMTP delivery. What you describe is a
POP server.
I assume the server is not your own? Your best bet is to start by asking
the admin. If you can telnet in with the password, but not read mail with
same, then (a) the POP server is having a problem reading the passwd file
(a job for the admin) or (b) it is one of those weird POP servers that
maintains a separate passwd database elsewhere (again, a job for the admin).
If the problem is just a matter of an errant lockfile, look at the
contents. It may be a copy of the mailbox. Rename it back to the mailbox
name and try again. (And save a copy of the to-be-replaced mailbox if it is
non-zero!)
