As some of you know, I'm about to order a new Mac G3 (hopefully tomorrow)
and move to the Mac world after 15 years on PCs.

Something that just occurred to me that may cause difficulties relates to
the 'pseudo-long' file names created in Win95 and having a Mac read these.

A while ago, I created a site for a client
(http://www.asianprivategallery.com/) who had a Mac notebook (don't recall
the OS version she was running). I gave her a floppy with her site files on
it. Many of the html and image file names were more than 8 characters.
While she could read the disk, she could not copy the files to her hard
drive without the file names being truncated. This was a real problem, and
we could not figure out a solution (beyond me renaming all the files and
re-coding the site, which I was not willing to do just so she could read
them from her hard drive).

Of course she could read the site off the web, since her browser correctly
interpreted the file names with no problem.

I have been told that the way Macs create and save file names is entirely
different "under the hood" from the way Windows does it, even though
superficially the file names may look the same. I don't know the details.

To get to my question: when I move my Win95 long file names onto my new
Mac, is it going to be able to read them? Or is there some name translation
utility I need?
