Are you *sure* the file names were long on the floppy? In other words,
could the floppy itself rather than the Mac have truncated the name?

To my knowledge, the Mac has always handled long file names (one of the
reasons for those "Windows95=Mac85" bumber stickers us arrogant Mac users
used to sport on our cars). However, since I've only been using Macs for
six years, I could be mistaken.
