Hi Barry (again)

Just in case you are still "worried" ;-)

This is from the "About Mac OS 8.1 Update" readme file that came with MacOS
8.1.

---------------------------------------------------------
PC Exchange 2.2

PC Exchange supports VFAT and FAT32 volume formats as used by Windows 95.
Support for Long File Names (LFN), DOS (FAT) file system and FAT32 support
for 4 GB Volumes has also been added. PC Exchange now has better support
for removable media, such as Jaz, Zip, and PMO.

Problems with Pinnacle Magnetic Optical DOS formatted drives, Maxtor SCSI
hard drives, PC formatted Quantum 160MB hard drives and SCSI DOS drives
greater than 1 GB have been addressed.

PC Exchange will now mount drives over 1 GB.

Get Info now shows the correct number of items on a DOS disk.

PC Exchange now works with shared folders.
---------------------------------------------------------

I know exactly what you mean with your problem as before I connected my Mac
and my WinNT box together with ethernet, I used to use sneakerNet and I
always had problems with long filenames. I couldn't understand it at first
as the Mac has always used long file names and has been able to read PC
disks for a very long time.

I too thought it was something about the way the PC dealt with the floppy,
not the Mac, but as you can see from the above Apple document extract... it
was the Mac's (software) fault all the time.

The time it got really hairy was when I had to do a conference CD. We had
asked that everyone use DOS 8.3 names on all platforms as I wanted to make
a crossplatform CD that could be also read on a Win 3.11 box. I still got
people from both "camps" giving me long filemanes... some (the newer users
from both camps) didn't really understand the problem.

I (as several I know on this list) have both machines. I've used both since
they were created. I do my work on my Mac and run mirror servers (of my
clients servers) on the WinNT box. That way I can test perl, coldfusion,
SSI's etc and see what they look like on both platforms and a variety of
browsers.

I'm about to get a 8 port hub now and add in my old 486 running WinfWG 3.11
and check it also. I have had problems with clients with font="-1" when
face="Arial". I don't think Arial is on Win3.11 standard and you might have
to use "MS Sans serif". Font="-1" with Times was almost unreadable on their
machine.

thanks
Bruce
