Debating is great, competition on an ongoing basis. Even better than
team sports.

True, but not enough in play, you're selected or not, only once.

I'll date myself here. When I was in hogh school, there was no score
kept in girl's intramural basketball.

I spent several weeks in Eastern Europe last summer. It became very
obvious very quickly that your best chance to find an English speaker
was a woman. What was interesing is that, whatever faults the eastern
block countries had, they were essentially gender blind. In the USSR 52%
of MDs are female as were 48% of the engineers. Nevertheless, the vast
majority of English speakers were women.
