so there are two issues:
(1) your data here contrasts 180 w/the report issued yesterday -- if you're
saying 2/3 of your current MIS students are Female. isn't that what you are
saying? or are you talking the entire student body? if so, what % of MIS
students are female.
(2) hiring women PhDs. I've talked to a few women w/PhDs in the sciences,
who are not in a university environment. Why did they make this decision? a)
they didn't want to sit around on their hands and wait for tenured white
males to retire so they could get tenure, b) they got better offers and/or
challenges outside academia, c) they changed fields.
the problem in hiring current PhDs that are female is a reflection, i think,
of what tamra, suz and I have written -- the attitudes etc. from the 60s and
70s.
as for me, it *never* occurred to me to pursue a computing degree when i was
in college in the 70s. i had had Zero exposure to computers. They were big
boxes in AC'ed rooms, in my mind. I'm do not remember what possessed me to
take a fortran 101 class at 8 am during winter quarter of my senior year <!>
but it must have been related to my minor in economics and love of math.
