A total of 48,000 people let go -- two waves of 20,000 and
28,000.  I would suspect that contractors have a better chance
for survival than does employees.   At least that seems to be the
case in many of the large pharmaceutical  companies here in NJ.
My sister is a contract programmer and has worked for them for
the past 8 years.  Seems without benefits, large companies can
work different deals into their budget.
