i just talked w/a friend at the company. she tells me it's 20,000 people
projected [no pink slips, just projections] over the Next Three Years <!>.
Heard that on the news here, too.

Folks, this is less than 10% of their workforce! Attrition would do this.

Now - does this mean that Boeing is anticipating a soft Asian market for
some time? Maybe.

But anyone who thinks the US economy is "robust" doesn't read the same ads
that I do. A friend just bought a new Ford Explorer at 0.9% interest (yes
you read that right) over a 4-year period - and for $500 over dealer
invoice. But our economy isn't soft. Right. And I'm the pope.

logically you're right. but logic doesn't hold at Boeing. ;-)

first loyalty is to "real employees." thus, contractors are let go with
little or no regard for their work or contribution. remember me in august.
our VP said "all contractors out in a week" regardless of their work
statements. or if they are more productive employees than "employees." no
evaluation.

<chuckle> yes - one high official sent a note out saying how appalled he
was that contractors had been allowed to have positions of importance where
their skill sets were integral to a program's success.

contractors are on a different budget line than employees. totally
different. so if you've set your manager's reward system up right (or
wrong) you can induce the manager to use contractors instead of employees -
just because of how it looks on budgets.

yes. but this is not the case here. few, if any, contractors are allowed to
work offsite and connect thru the firewall. they've only recently made it
easier for employees to telecommute who have jobs that lend themselves to
this mode. and part of that, i'm convinced, is because boeing, and uswest,
and microsoft, and other big firms in puget sound all have to do stuff to
reduce rush hour traffic - part of a complex state law designed to provide
inducements for flex time, etc.
