I hear you. I believe you. I think you're right.
But let me tell you what my experience has been -- via one anecdote.
I recently interviewed for a full-time position at a local
company that I'd classify as "mature start-up". They're not
quite making money yet, but they're not losing it nearly as fast,
and it appears that they will start making a profit in ~6 months or so.
They are entirely an online retail business: in other words, they would
not exist in any way, shape or form were it not for the Internet.
The interview involved a senior Unix/web position -- which I'm qualified
for, having roughly a decade more experience with Unix than the most
senior person they currently have on staff. I also have half a dozen
workstations and other systems networked here at home, so I have at least
enough computer horsepower to develop and test more things.
They flat-out rejected the idea of telecommuting, EVEN if I was willing
to take a salary cut to do it. The end result is that they turned down
a chance to get me at less than half of my consulting rates (modulo benefits)
because I didn't want to spend 2.5 hours/day in a car.
I still haven't figured out how they managed to acquire such ancient
attitudes when they've only been around for 3 years.
