The problem with the submit it services...
A lot are to sites that just list the last N links submitted...
Many turn around and spam you for or with newsletters, requests for
re-submission, even requests for money!
Most, other than the top ten search engines or specialty engines, just
don't bring any hits! I submitted a special page to one of these, and the
robots left, it got ZERO hits -- no visibility on the top ten engines what
so ever!

Well, Peter, just what do you call "readiness"?
My take on "readiness", is knowing what to put on the page, not
syntactical correctness. (I kind of honk my horn here, as I maintain a
database on this kind of stuff at http://www.mall-net.com/se_report/ ) Top
ten position, or top whatever position is useless if it is not in the
right keywords. I get idiots sending me spammage all the time about this
page or that page not being indexed in the top ten, and for only a minor
fee... But the words they have chosen are NOT the words I want the page
indexed under!
Your chance of getting on the top ten for one word queries is very
low anyway. Nor would you want to, for most of your visitors will be
looking for something else. You want to be near the top on two and three
word queries for your product category.
After looking at what you have, you need to see what kinds of
searches people are running for that thing. One retailer was trying very
hard to get major positioning for his cell phone accessories. Nothing
doing. He hired me to research how to get that position, and I (naturally)
looked at what kinds of cell phone queries were being made. I found that
a considerable number of them were for cellphone battery. He worked that
into the meta tags, header lines and text, and even though he was no
better of on cell phone queries, he got high enough position on cellphone
battery, that he is selling a lot of batteries from that page.
So if you want to be "ready", you need to have the right terms, the
ones people are really looking for, on the meta tags and even more
important, in the pages themselves -- in the title lie, the meta
description tag, the header lines, and the text itself. That way, you will
get more buyers and less tire kickers, or guys who want to kick you for
having the wrong page under the word they are looking for something else
for. See http://www.mall-net.com/se_report and se_tech for more
information.
And if you don't get good position, change something, and try again.
Yes, there is a several day to several week lag between submitting and it
showing up in the indexes, but if you keep changing the page every week or
so, you should be able to get away with resubmitting it. Or... create a
new page more oriented to what they are asking about this season, this
month, or this week.
