All this talk about controlling the kids brings to mind my psychiatrist
friend in NC, Dr. Farr, who says, "the harder you try to control something,
the more out of control it will get."
The Internet wasn't around to be a source of friction when my son was
growing up. On other issues, I took Dr. Farr's advice and minimized the
amount of control I exerted over him. I drew the line at where something
really bothered me personally. I didn't tell him he couldn't do it, only
that he couldn't do it around me. If we'd had Internet access then, I would
have told him that he was welcome to surf any kind of site he wanted, but
that I personally am offended by porn sites and not to look at them while I
was home.
Apparently my approach worked. He went through a wild period of
experimentation when he was 17-18, then focused on doing what he loves the
most. Now 23, he surfs, skateboards, snowboards, competes in whitewater
kayaking rodeos, teaches kayaking and does photography and videography for
one of the two top whitewater kayaking schools* in the US, and helps lead
kayaking trips to Ecuador and Costa Rica. I got an e-mail from a friend
just last week saying, "I saw Craig on the river and he's an AWESOME
paddler!" I'm very proud of Craig and don't feel I could have reared him
any better with help from the government.
