a monopoly is when one company has such a large market share that they can
effectively control competition. this is an economics definition. somewhere
i think i read where the courts have interpretted 'monopoly' market power
to be where >70% of a market is controlled by one firm.
it does not, necessarily, mean that "there is no choice," ie, only one vendor.
illegal monopolistic practices are separate issue from the existence of a
monopoly. this is the legal side.
oligopolies are where the bulk of the market is controlled by a few firms
-- for example, poultry or beef processing in the US where something like
75% is controlled by 3 firms (or maybe 4, I forget). it's more concentrated
in beef than poultry. this is an economics definition.
cable companies have non-compete licenses that give them an effective
monopoly over any specific geographical area, but as an industry, cable (in
the US) is an oligopoly.
these are market structure terms.
