It seems to me to be a win/win situation for USWest since AFN will buy
their T3 access from USWest. There are very few people here who need ISDN
and fewer still who can afford it. (Most of us Web/software developer types
will easily fit around two or three picnic tables pulled together on the
deck at Ashland Creek Bar & Grill during Thursday night "Hacker"
gatherings.) According to what I've heard, the City will provide T3 access
to ISPs, most of whom have only T1 lines, rather than dial-up service to
the public--thus avoiding the need for a big tech support staff. I suppose
they might also provide dial-up to business clients who need direct
highspeed connections, but I'm real vague on the details. I do know that a
friend who currently colocates her Web hosting server in Texas just bought
a house in the Railroad District so that she'd be on the first loop of the
AFN and would be able to run her server from home.

Uhmmm .... I thought that's what it was already!

Another concern of opponents is that ill-informed local citizens will blame
the City for the content their kids have access to. I hope our citizenry
isn't that stupid. Ashland is a fairly sophisticated town.

Yes, I think what's driving the Council's support of AFN if a vague sense
of excitement rather than pure logic. Personally, I think excitement is a
valuable form of inner guidance, so I hope the logic-driven bean-counting
naysayers don't win out.

teehee! What? Drivers Ed in every high school! Who'd a thunk it?
