G'day Ivan :)

>Finnally I have my "intranet" at home (2 PC and 2 RealTek Ethernet
>cards and a cable of course).

I has a similiar small network, an NT and a Mac. I hope to soon add in my
old 486 with Win3.11 and, if I can get a sufficiently big HD for it, make
it dual boot Linux. This may also have the occasional mating with my wife's
Mac Laptop. I'll need to get a hub for all that... but meanwhile, back at
the direct connect...

I use WinGate to do proxy serving and thus allow several computers to use
one IP address. The NT server is connected to the net and it has a proper
IP address dynamically allocated, for one ISP, and permanent for the other.
I gave the proxy server an IP of 192.168.0.1 (as suggested in the docs) and
the Mac 192.168.0.2. The Mac always talks to the NT (and the net) via
Wingate.

My situation has recently been complicated by my Uni bringing in volume
charging. While I don't have to pay myself, I still have to have the
software running and go through extra proxies. This does mean that I have
to fiddle with Wingate more often than I'd like.

Anyway, Wingate is avaliable at http://www.winagate.net/ , note the net
bit as someone else seems to have grabbed the .com address. You can
download a version for free that will allow you to run your two computers.
This "single user licence" is to allow two computers to share one line. I
did find however that sometimes the definition of a single user was a bit
hard to follow as sometimes you can open too many sessions etc and be
perceived to be more than a single user. The NT (the computer I have it
running on) doesn't have to run via wingate ... only my Mac does.

To remove any ambiquity and problems that I occasionally had using the free
version, I have now installed a five user version and I have no real
problem with it. I'll need the five user version for my planned expansion
anyway.

The outside world can see my NT (that is, the servers I run on my NT) but
wingate acts as a firewall also so outsiders can't see my Mac... this is
mostly good but occasssionally I'd like to show people stuff on my Mac.
There may be a way to do it but I don't know it. (any clues would be
welcome :)

Have a look at it anyway... I've been using it to do all my work for 18
months now.

I suspect that someone will suggest using Linux and a free proxy server. I
would be happy to do that but I need to allow the people that I work with
access to the NT server to demo stuff before it is uploaded to the work
server. Would that be possible if it was running from the Linux proxy? I
only have one real IP address.

thanks
Bruce
