This is a myth. Unix is no more complex than Windows, and it is certainly
much better organized. Unlike Windows, there *is* a rhyme and reason to it,
and once you understand the basic principles of its design, the details
begin to fall into place quite rapidly.

Not the answer. The answer is:
1. If you are an application-ONLY user, i.e. someone who lives
inside an environment consisting of one or more of: mail client,
web browser, news client, word processor, spreadsheet, graphics
tool, etc., then get a Mac. You will be rewarded by a machine
that you can administer yourself, including installing new
applications, handling OS upgrades and patches, and so on.
With very few exceptions, you will find it difficult to shoot
yourself in the foot and you can concentrate on using the
applications -- which is why you bought the computer.
2. If you are a developer or service provider, get Unix/Linux.
The Internet was developed on Unix, and continues to be developed
there, to the exclusion of all other platforms. Unix is the
most advanced widely-available platform for software development
available (Inferno is decidely better, but is not widely
available and is still at the hackers-only stage). You will
no doubt have a learning curve if you are unfamiliar with
Unix. However, given the freely available source code for
multiple implementations (BSD, Linux) as well as the freely
available source code for most of the applications, as well
as the immense resources available via the 'net, this should
not be a problem.
3. If you are a masochist who wishes to bloat the coffers of
one of the most downright evil, progress-retarding, broken-software-
issuing, non-Internet-standards-compliant companies on the planet,
and you'd like to spend your time dealing with undocumented (or
deliberately mis-documented) "features" of a braindead underperforming
nonportable nonscalable unreliable insecure excuse for an
operating system, then buy Windows and suffer to your heart's content.
