What's the answer?
A few weeks ago, Ralph Nader, the consumer activist in the US, sent an open
letter to Microsoft and computer manufacturers, proposing that when a user
buys a computer, the user will first see a screen that lets the user select
which operating system she will use: Windows 95, Unix, or OS/2.
I burst out in laughter when I read that. Poor Mr. Nader. Poor users.
Imagine the chaos if this were to happen. Gateway, Compaq, Dell, etc. would
spend millions of hours, just trying to get millions of users to turn off
Unix and get back to Windows 95. The worst damage would be caused by unix
fanatics who constantly insist that "Unix is better" which would mean that
millions of poor users would install unix on their systems and then never
get anything to work.
Look, folks: I use unix. But I know damned well that for 99% of users, unix
is hopelessly complex.
PC makers know this. They will never put unix on PCs for home users, simply
because they could never began to support 10 million users. Most of the
users would simply think that the computer was broken and return it.
Sun, one of the main unix companies, is infamous for their scornful attitude
towards naive users: if you don't know unix, you shouldn't be messing around
with our machines. I know; I wrote one of their developer's manual.
So what's the answer? Use Windows or Mac.
