Denise, you should realize that "large fonts" and "small fonts" is a
Windoze thing and does not exist on Macs and (I assume) UNX systems.

IMHO, the standard is that web sites should accomodate the "lowest common
denominator", that is, 640x480 displays in 256 colors. It is the only
logical thing to do, except... if the site is narrowly targeted at "power
users" (geeks, gearheads, tec types) then I can see designing for 800x600
while being aware that some users will even higher res displays. But there
will still be "white space" for those users.

The only way to accomodate all possible screen resolutions is to use
percentage table width settings, and in reality, for most (not all!) web
designs, the results are not going to be pretty as the browser window width
changes. To make it look good for everyone can be time-consuming.

I use an overall fixed width table of 560-600 pixels (with nested tables
inside that to control layout) and tell the client they just have to accept
the right side white space, while explaining why I'm doing what I'm doing.

Some clients are just so inflexible and demanding that you may have to do
that. But I would recommend that you try very hard to explain the issues to
them and get them to do it right.

It is simply
