singer Lee Greenwood. Pennsylvania is viewed as critical for both the
Democrats and Republicans. ...

Chris Hackett addressed the increasingly feisty crowd as they await the
arrival of Gov. Palin.
Each time the Republican candidate for the seat in the 10th Congressional

Secret Service Investigating Threat From Scranton Palin Rally

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a threatening remark directed at
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during a political event in
Scranton.
The agency followed up on a report in The Times-Tribune that a member of
the crowd shouted, "Kill him!" after one mention of Mr. Obama's name
during a rally Tuesday for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah

Spokesman Darrin Blackford said the agency takes the threat seriously and

Who's In Control Of McCain's Campaign?
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14555.html
John McCain's campaign is pretty much a shambles right now.
If you don't believe me, just listen to John McCain. His chief goal these
days is calming down his crowds, not firing them up. ...
The real problem for McCain is that Palin is running a separate -- and
scary -- campaign that does not seem to be under anybody’s control.
She storms around the country saying: "Our opponent ... is someone who
sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough that he's
palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."
She also says: "This is not a man who sees America as you see America and
as I see America."
Get the drift? Obama is not only different, not only an alien incapable of
loving his country, he is an actual friend of terrorists who would attack
America. ...
This is scary stuff. And you know who is getting scared by it? John
McCain.
When a crowd member said at a town meeting in Lakeville, Minn., on Friday
that he feared what would happen if Obama were elected, McCain said that
Obama is "a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared
of as president of the United States."
The crowd booed. ...

Poll Finds Attacks By McCain Turn Off Voters
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27188680
The McCain campaign's recent angry tone and sharply personal attacks on
Senator Barack Obama appear to have backfired and tarnished Senator John
McCain more than their intended target, the latest New York Times/CBS News
poll has found.
After several weeks in which the McCain campaign unleashed a series of
strong political attacks on Mr. Obama, trying to tie him to a former 1960s
radical, among other things, the poll found that more voters see Mr.
McCain as waging a negative campaign than Mr. Obama. Six in 10 voters
surveyed said that Mr. McCain had spent more time attacking Mr. Obama than
explaining what he would do as president; by about the same number, voters
said Mr. Obama was spending more of his time explaining than attacking.
..
And after nearly eight years of increasingly unpopular Republican rule in
the White House, 52 percent of those polled said that they held a
favorable view of the Democratic Party, compared with 37 percent who said
they held a favorable view of the Republican Party. Voters said that they
preferred Democrats to Republicans when it came to questions about who
would better handle the issues that are of the greatest concern to voters
-- including the economy, health care and the war in Iraq. ...

McCain To Suspend Campaign In Order to Rescue Campaign
- tomburka.com
In a dramatic move, John McCain announced today that he was going to
suspend his campaign in a last ditch effort to save his campaign.
McCain called upon Barack Obama to honor his "state of emergency" and also
suspend campaigning, but doubted that Obama would do so because Obama
failed to put "country first" -- and also, McCain said, because Obama is
an Arab terrorist. "And a fine, decent family man with whom I have
disagreements," he added. "And a crazy Muslim."
McCain's campaign has been described by critics and supporters alike as a
total disaster. "Others would continue their campaigns under these
conditions, but that's not what a maverick would do," McCain told
reporters. "This is why I'm not popular in Washington." Others disagreed,
saying McCain was not popular in Washington because of his unsightly nose
hairs and what some called his "increasingly uncontrollable jowls," among
other things.
McCain reiterated his latest campaign slogan, saying that he was "not
afraid to fight," and that "America needs a real fighter right now," but
that "it takes a real fighter to stop fighting because sometimes not
fighting is more effective fighting than actually fighting." At that
point, aides grabbed McCain and threw him headfirst into a waiting
limousine.
Supporters applauded McCain's bold choice, saying that the candidate
needed to act because things looked so dire. "He's not running for Miss
Congeniality," said supporter John Gaffney of Ohio. "Although I can
understand that to some outsiders it looks that way."

The Final Debate: Angry White Man
http://tinyurl.com/3tpqdl
John of the Grimaces met Barack the Unflappable in Hempstead tonight, and
the guy with the arctic cool, not surprisingly, prevailed.
Now we know why Obama's aides were goading McCain earlier this week to
raise the Bill Ayres issue in the debate. They wanted to play McCain's
rage against Obama's measured, judicious, statesmanlike, even a bit boring
presidentiality. And McCain obliged them big time.
The Arizona senator had been doing well up until that moment, which came
about half an hour into the debate. But as he recounted the Obama attack
ads (which may outnumber McCain's in raw numbers, since Obama has more
money than God, but which come nowhere close to the percentage of McCain
commercials that are attack ads), McCain started seething, and after Obama
answered his attack on the Ayres connection, McCain couldn't stop. He kept
on attacking, then remembered that people didn't actually like this,
pirouetted to say that his campaign was about issues, and fell flat on his
face, not to rise again for the duration of the debate. ...

VOTING FOR OBAMA ANYWAY
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1008/Voting_for_Obama_anyway.html
I just got an astounding e-mail from a Republican consultant I know well.
He's a guy who's always thought Obama had a "glass jaw," and was always
among those agitating for hitting Obama harder.
Recently, he conducted a focus group in an upper-Midwestern state, showing
them the kind of ad he thought would work: A no-holds-barred attack, cut
for an independent group, which hasn't aired.
I'm just going to reprint his amazed e-mail about the focus group:
. .
"The two most unreal moments of my professional life of watching focus
groups:
54 year-old white male, voted Kerry '04, Bush '00, Dole '96, hunter,
NASCAR fan...hard for Obama said: "I'm gonna hate him the minute I vote
for him. He's gonna be a bad president. But I won't ever vote for another
god-damn Republican. I want the government to take over all of Wall Street
and bankers and the car companies and Wal-Mart run this county like we
used to when Reagan was President."
The next was a woman, late 50s, Democrat but strongly pro-life. Loved B.
and H. Clinton, loved Bush in 2000. "Well, I don't know much about this
terrorist group Barack used to be in with that Weather guy but I'm sick of
paying for health insurance at work and that's why I'm supporting Barack."
I felt like I was taking crazy pills. I sat on the other side of the
glass and realized...this really is the Apocalypse. The Seventh Seal is
broken and its time for eight years of pure, delicious crazy...."

So Much For Experience And Honor
http://tinyurl.com/4fqbef
My 401(k) is down $21,000 since the end of September. And John McCain
thinks I should be worried about William Ayers.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but these are strange days. And it's
difficult not to empathize with the Arizona senator, who has spent these
last weeks flailing like a man trying to hit a fastball in the dark. His
campaign has lurched about looking for ways to connect; the attempt to tie
Barack Obama to Ayers, a one-time '60s radical, is among the most
desperate and disappointing. ...
At one level, this is nothing new. Politicians have been slinging muck at
one another ever since Thomas Jefferson was accused -- accurately, it
turns out -- of fathering a child by a slave. But there's a difference
here. What McCain is doing is not the usual business of questioning an
opponent's plans, fitness or intelligence. Rather, he is attempting to
resurrect the threadbare narrative which holds that Obama, by dint of
color and heritage, is something foreign, something scary, something not
of us. ...
