S.C. Gov. Sanford Dishes Detail Of Meetings With Mistress
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=7966772

Despite facing backlash and pressure to resign for his extramarital affair with
his Argentinean mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford
today offered more details their relationship, telling the Associated Press
today that he saw her five times in the past year.

The governor revealed that his five visits with Chapur in the last 12 months
included two romantic weekends in New York.

The two met in person a total of seven times in their eight-year relationship,
during which they also corresponded via e-mail. ...

The governor first met the now 41-year-old Argentinean woman -- described as
"refined and professional" by her friends in Buenos Aires -- for the first time
in 2001 at an open-air dance spot in Uruguay, the governor told the AP.

Sanford, who was then serving his final term in Congress at the time, said the
two began corresponding by e-mail after meeting on the dance floor.

"There was some kind of connection from the very beginning," he told The
Associated Press, adding that he advised her that night on her failing
marriage.

He then met her for a coffee date in New York in 2004 during the Republican
National Convention. Sanford told the AP that neither of the first two meetings
was romantic.

In a tearful press conference last Wednesday, Sanford said that his
eight-year-long friendship with Chapur turned romantic only in the last year.
In today's AP interview he revealed that the relationship turned physical
during a 2008 state economic development trip to South America, a trip for
which he is reimbursing state money used on his tickets and other expenses. ...

FACE THE NATION, June 28, 2009

BOB SCHIEFFER: This seems to go beyond just the fact that, you know, [Gov
Sanford] became involved in this relationship. He was basically missing in
action for five days. ... Isn't this more than just a sex scandal here? I mean,
this is dereliction of duty, isn't it?

GOV. HALEY BARBOUR [R-MS]: You know, Bob, I don't know all the details. But
I've been in politics a long time. I've made it my policy, I just don't talk
about people's personal problems. I don't-- I don't think it's appropriate, I
don't think it's polite, and I don't think it-- it achieves any purpose.
 . . . . . . . . . .

That's okay, don't answer the question asked, and forget you ever said THIS:

Haley Barbour, Sept. 15, 1998
FOX News "Special Report with Brit Hume"

"And now we have this president who treated Monica Lewinsky in such a way that
it makes prostitution look dignified and ennobling. I mean, he made her a sex
toy, a sex object. And now what do these women say? That it doesn't make any
difference?
"The American people hear that with a voice louder than a bolt of lightning and
thunder when these same people never say one word about the way that this young
woman was treated, when they've spent their whole careers complaining about it
when it was the president of a company or a Republican Senator or a possible
judge? The public sees through that like nothing you ever saw."

AP Newsbreak: SC Gov 'Crossed Lines' With Women
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090630/ap_on_re_us/us_sc_governor

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said Tuesday that he "crossed lines" with a
handful of women other than his mistress -- but never had sex with them.

The governor said he "never crossed the ultimate line" with anyone but Maria
Belen Chapur, the Argentine at the center of a scandal that has derailed his
once-promising political career.

"This was a whole lot more than a simple affair, this was a love story,"
Sanford said. "A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of
the day." ...

He said that during the encounters with other women he "let his guard down"
with some physical contact but "didn't cross the sex line." He wouldn't go into
detail. ...

Media watch: Giuliani Surprisingly Rational On Sanford Sex Scandal
http://coloradoindependent.com/32225/media-watch-giuliani-surprisingly-rational-on-sanford-sex-scandal

Why ask Rudy Giuliani to weigh in on the Mark Sanford infidelity madness unless
you're going to ask him directly about his own infidelity madness? MSNBC's
Morning Joe misses the opportunity, letting Rudy go on about Bill Clinton's
infidelities, instead. Weird. Imagine Clinton sitting in that newsroom and no
one ever mentioning "that woman" Lewinsky or that other woman Jennifer Flowers
or any of the rest of the other women. Could never happen!

MSNBC also lets Rudy turn the Sanford story into a bipartisan scandal.

"For every Republican who gets into this kind of trouble, I can point to a
Democrat."

What kind of trouble, exactly? The running off to Argentina unannounced and
turning off the mobile phone? The certifiable temporary love-sick insanity?

If Rudy means the adultery part, then of course he's right on. We should all
agree to take sex scandals off the table: no more reporting; no more watching
and reading; no more sex scandals, period. The exception to the rule, of
course, would be any politicians who make a big show of their status as "values
candidates" and who publicly aim to impose their ideas of morality on Americans
as law and policy. They would remain open targets. Let the games begin!

MSNBC brings on Rudy Giuliani to discuss Mark Sanford's affair.... I'm suprised

"In politics you can get away with anything as long as it's what's expected. If

things can't get better than this in the economy."

Republican Governor Confesses To Having Affairs With Other Republicans; 'I
Screwed Them All'
http://www.enduringvision.com/news/politics_062409.php

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, recently believed to have gone missing on a
long, solitary hiking trip -- an acceptable and normal rite of passage for
governors known as "I'll be gone for a few days, figure shit out yourselves" --
revealed today that he was actually in Nevada, having a torrid gay love affair
with fellow Republican and Senator John Ensign.

"We were screwing each other, over and over again," Sanford said tearfully at a
press conference.

In the end, Sanford confessed to affairs with over 100 prominent Republican
politicians, including Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. Florida Governor
Charlie Crist's name was on the list, but was not a surprise to anyone

"We tried to stop, we really did," said Sanford, "but in the end, practically
the entire Republican party was just somehow drawn to fucking itself" ...

Public opinion on the moral transgressions seems mixed, with many pointing out
that although Governor Sanford did the wrong thing by cheating on his wife, he
did the right thing in being honest about it, after keeping it a secret and
lying about it.

"It takes a real man to, eventually, say he screwed up, and ask you for your
forgiveness," said Lieutenant Governor André Bauer. "That's why I accept his
apology, because if he never would have confessed to me and asked me for my
apology, I just wouldn't have given it to him, because I couldn't have, because
I wouldn't have known to."

Political scientists say that marital infidelity is one of the best barometers
modern society has in determining the political value of elected officials;
staying faithful to one's partner, as former President George W. Bush did, is a
"true test of character, and therefore ability to govern," says Janice Freed,
researcher at the Cato Institute.

"President Clinton had an affair in office, while President George W. Bush did
not," Freed said. "I rest my case."

Coleman Concedes; Franken Wins Senate Seat
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2009/06/30/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry5126051.shtml

Nearly eight months after voters went to the polls, the Minnesota Senate race
has finally yielded a winner: Democrat Al Franken.

Republican Norm Coleman conceded his loss in a press conference Tuesday
afternoon, saying he has called to congratulate the former comedian on his
victory. His statement came after the Minnesota Supreme Court unanimously
rejected his appeal of a lower court ruling in Franken's favor.

"The Supreme Court of Minnesota has spoken," Coleman said. "I respect its
decision and will abide by its result." ...

Former Sen. Norm Coleman on Minnesota Ruling
http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?parm1=5&docID=news-000003157157

QUESTION: Do you still think there are votes uncounted that would have elected
you?

COLEMAN: From the very beginning, if I didn't believe that, we wouldn't have
processed the appeal. But the bottom line is that's -- that's history I'm not
looking back. I'm not, you know, questioning what's counted, what's not
counted.

The Supreme Court of Minnesota has decided. As I began, we are a nation of
laws, not men and women, and the court has spoken. And as a result, I think
it's time to look forward and not look back.
