Swine-Flu Outbreak Could Be Linked To Smithfield Factory Farms
http://www.grist.org/article/2009-04-25-swine-flu-smithfield/

The outbreak of a new flu strain—a nasty mash-up of swine, avian, and human
viruses—has infected 1,000 people in Mexico and the U.S., killing 68 [revised:
over 150, suspected]. The World Health Organization warned Saturday that the
outbreak could reach global pandemic levels.

Is Smithfield Foods, the world's largest pork packer and hog producer, linked
to the outbreak? Smithfield operates massive hog-raising operations in Perote,
Mexico, in the state of Vera Cruz, where the outbreak originated. The
operations, grouped under a Smithfield subsidiary called Granjas Carroll, raise
950,000 hogs per year, according to the company Web site.

On Friday, the U.S. disease-tracking blog Biosurveillance published a timeline
of the outbreak containing this nugget, dated April 6 (major tip of the hat to
Paula Hay, who alerted me to the Smithfield link on the Comfood listserv and
has written about it on her blog, Peak Oil Entrepreneur):

"Residents [of Perote] believed the outbreak had been caused by contamination
from pig breeding farms located in the area. They believed that the farms,
operated by Granjas Carroll, polluted the atmosphere and local water bodies,
which in turn led to the disease outbreak. According to residents, the company
denied responsibility for the outbreak and attributed the cases to "flu."
However, a municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations
indicated that the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig
waste and that the outbreak was linked to the pig farms. It was unclear whether
health officials had identified a suspected pathogen responsible for this
outbreak." ...

you all hoping that Osama bin Laden or Bernard Madoff doesn't get this?"

Swine Flu Epidemic Hits U.S.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano declared a public health emergency
after a Mexican swine flu epidemic hit the United States. What do you think?

Charlie Sarris, Garage Door Hanger
"I had a glass of orange juice this morning. I'll be fine."

Heidi Crittenden, Pig Farmer
"Can you get infected if you work in Mexico at a pig farm where all the pigs
are infected and you take no health precautions? If so, I have made some
terrible life decisions."

Sam Smith, Insulation Cutter
"Let's see if I can recall what precautions I took during the last outbreak of
swine flu back in 1976. Oh, yes, I bought some oregano from a guy at an Atlanta
Rhythm Section concert and scorched my chest trying to iron on a 'Beaver
Patrol' decal."

GOP REAFFIRMS PRO-SWINE POSITION
Palin, Rove Show Solidarity With Pigs

Responding to the furor over the Republican Party's opposition to pandemic
preparedness funding in the recent stimulus bill, GOP leaders came forward
today to reaffirm the party's pro-swine position.

"The Republican Party has traditionally been the pro-swine party," said GOP
strategist Karl Rove on Fox News. "This is a moment in our history when
everyone must ask themselves: Are you with the pigs, or are you against them?"

Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) also voiced her solidarity with swine, telling
reporters in Anchorage, "The only difference between a pitbull and a pig is
lipstick."

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), one of the staunchest opponents of pandemic
preparedness spending, said that the public should ignore the "scare tactics"
of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and "go about their normal
business with pigs."

Rove agreed, telling Fox's Sean Hannity, "I think it's the pinnacle of
hypocrisy that the same forces on the left who support same-sex marriage are
now trying to limit our contact with pigs, which is the most normal thing in
the world, and one of the most beautiful."
