When I brought the cat home from the shelter, he was named "Doofus." While generally appropriate at times, that's not a name: that's a term of endearment. A new name would be needed, but I wanted to take my time with this task (something T.S. Eliot would approve of). Anyhoot, I left the cat alone in the apartment so that he could explore it on his own terms and went to visit a friend who lived nearby to have dinner. We both went to the same college and she was hosting a friend of hers (also a fellow alum) for the weekend. Over dinner, the discussion turned towards the cat, which, I should add, I had just adopted earlier from a PetCo that day. I mentioned that I was still trying to come up with a name for him, but that I wanted to give him a Gaelic sounding name since he seemed kind of fae: long misty gray hair, sea foam green eyes. The friend who was visiting immediately piped up, "Like Seamus?" There was a teasing tone to the way he pronounced it that caused my friend to snertle and blush a bit. I pounced on "Seamus" right away, perfect name, but I wanted to know what the teasing was about. It turns out that one of the names my friend pondered for her dog was "Seamus," in honor of the poet. "Seamus" is such an inappropriate moniker for her dog. So inappropriate that it was definitely worth teasing her about it. Glance at the photoset for this pup: http://www.flickr.com/photos/basketcase/sets/97692/ His name is Howard, sometimes Howie. I dogsat here and there for him and the name fits him like a glove. Upon returning home, I turned on the lights and called out "Seamus?! Seamus?!" The cat came out from hiding, obviously approving the new name. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
