Personally, I would prefer to see all units standing with their feet
at or near the bottom of the hex rather then centered on the hex. You
would gain the advantage of all units "feet" being at the same height,
but without the problem of the units overlapping into another hex.
Units would superficially appear to be in front of any objects in the
center of the hex, thus not requiring any adjustment to most graphics.
The units might need to be lifted a little for bridges and the like,
but I don't think it would be any worse than the current (or should I
see previous) system.
Of course, this might present a problem with the ellipses, but since I
rarely use them, I won't likely notice. I will leave it to someone
more experienced with their use to comment.

You may have noticed in trunk the ellipses have changed, and units are
standing in the center of the hex. It was an experiment to try to
improve the appearance of the game. In a field of grass the difference
isn't obvious. But it matters in other circumstances.
