I more than willing to try the 6 month cycle another benefit to try it
now is that the work of the GSoC students will be released shortly after
they finished it. I'd suggest to start the feature freeze shortly after
the 17th of August (GSoC deadline) and then focus on the release.

I really would like to make a decision about this, so I can start to
plan what I want to do before 1.8. (Half a year is not enough to
finished the GUI, but not confident a year would be either.)
