This doesn't sound correct. If you did well in the earlier scenarios,
you should be well positioned to do well in the current one. The issue
is when you win the scenarios without doing well.

There are a number of campaigns where there are several lean gold scenarios in a row. If you didn't do well on the last rake-in-the-gold scenario, you might not have the gold to complete the fourth or fifth scenario out.

It is tedious (because I have done just this) to go back to the last rake-in-the-gold scenario, maximize gold acquisition in that scenario (in some cases, by not winning it quite as fast), replay the next several scenarios with as few recruits/recalls as possible, and then finally win the original scenario that you didn't have the resources to win.

This isn't fun in the same way that replaying a scenario multiple times with different strategies is fun.

I am also not convinced of you claim of being locked into upgraded units
when you don't have enough gold. Even though the cost of recalling upgraded
units is comparable to recruiting new ones, they are a lot more expensive
to maintain. I have been able to win gold tight scenarios with mostly
fresh recruits when I couldn't using mostly recalled upgrades. (I didn't
like having to let units get killed, but that was necessary in order to
win.)

If I am developing a relationship with a cadre of units during a campaign, I don't like to have to switch to a bunch of raw recruits to win a scenario. It breaks the continuity of the experience for me. I want those old campaigners with me; I've gotten fond of them and learned their strengths and weaknesses, and they tend to work together well. I like that we get new comrades along the way, and sometimes, regrettably, lose a dear old friend, but having to switch to a band of raw recruits interferes with enjoyment of the storyline.

Also, as a girl gamer, I hate losing units. I will replay scenarios many times to see if I can get through them with less loss of life. I hate slaughter scenarios where you have to keep throwing units at the enemy and losing them.
