I had a look and wheezy-backports already contains SDL2, so Debian
stable users can use backports to get the package.

Since I've seen no objections I will start to work on SDL2 preparations
soon. For starters it will be looking closer at SDL2, the real code
modifications will happen not happen before 1.12 is branched off.
