I just repeated the same steps I did before and it works now.  Guess it was
some kind of transient failure?  *Perhaps* fixed by my checking out
WGET_1_5_3 from my "dan" account...??

FWIW, I'm using CVS 1.10.8 on AIX 4.1.5.0.01.
